AFM is an Activated Filter Media, manufactured and activated by Dryden Aqua under ISO procedures to have a high negative zeta potential and catalytic self sterilizing properties.
AFM is manufactured from reprocessed glass, but it is not a basic crushed glass filter media.. We have a basic crushed glass filter media product available for low end applications. AFM is a highly processed product which has been tested by independent UK Government laboratories and the water industry and has been certified safe for all water filtration applications. Filter sand has by-passed the regulations because it was in use before the regulations were in place. However man made filtration products are not exempt, and AFM is the only filtration media that is in compliance with the regulations and is safe to use for applications such as drinking water, swimming pools and aquaria.. A basic crushed glass product does not have the surface active properties, there will be a hydraulic lenses effect which leads to channeling, there are also serious health implications for the public and contractors from using a basic crushed glass product. Dryden Aqua have completed a 1.2 million Euro Research Project in co-operation with the European Commission under the Life Environment initiative to solve these problems. catalysis as well as acting as a mechanical filtration media. AFM is a great deal more than a recycled glass filter media.
AFM-plus is a surface active open structure catalytic molecular sieve will be available in 2007. It has up to 5 times the surface adsorption and catalytic activity as standard AFM. Performance will be almost equivalent to activated carbon, and it will sterilise the water at the same time. The product is not consumed, a simple back-flush recharges the bed. (Patent pending)

1. Bed expansion should be around 150mm for a 1m deep bed.
2. In some cases such as the removal of iron and manganese from water supplies, it can actually be more effective to use a short back-flush and allow retained metals and solids to stay in the bed. The retained solids can in some cases improve the performance of the filter. For example, if there are diatoms ( algae) in the water, the diatoms will improve filter performance, but the pressure head will also increase. For critical applications such as swimming pools and drinking water, the back-flush should continue until the water runs clear. On average AFM will remove around 50% more solids from the water than a sand filter, so the back-flush times end up being similar, but almost twice as much solids are removed from the water.
3. Air purge for 2 to 8 minutes prior to back-flushing is recommended for all applications, however unlike sand air scouring is not essential for AFM, although it does improve performance.
